Montana ski program turns skiers into Olympians
By Mike Mestas
It’s easy to get lost in the wonder and the awe of the talent of Olympic athletes. But when you step back and take a moment to realize the hard work that goes into making world-class athletes, it becomes even more astounding.

Mike Papke knows a little about how to make Olympians. “I spend some time on the US National Team,” he said at Bridger Bowl, before heading up the mountain to train an athlete.

It's easy to get lost in the wonder and the awe of the talent of Olympic athletes. But when you step back and take a moment to realize the hard work that goes into making world-class athletes, it becomes even more astounding.
Papke is one of the coaches, and the Director for mogul training with the Bridger Ski Foundation. On this day, he’s training Carson Bockhahn, a 17-year-old wonder on the mogul hill.

Papke has coached kids just like Bockhahn for 15 years. He started doing that after he retired from his sport in the late 1990s. For Papke, coaching has become even more of a thrill than participating in the sport itself.

“Being a coach is way more emotional,” he said. “There is just so many variables that you cannot control.”

The Bozeman-based Bridger Ski Foundation is a non-profit group that trains kids in various ski events. But ask Papke, and he will tell you that it’s much more than just any old sports club.

“Once they get hooked, It’s a lot of commitment,” Papke said.

In fact, the program has turned out a couple of Olympians for this Olympic season. Heather McPhie of Bozeman and Bryon Wilson of Butte both trained with the group. Now both are taking spots on the Olympic mogul team. In the eight available spots on the team, two now belong to Montana skiers.

Papke said many skiers from the group have made it to the National Team before, but this time it happened to fall on the Olympic cycle. He said it’s nice to see somone take the sport all the way and calls it a big pat on the back for a coach.

“It’s pretty unique,” Papke said.

Now Bockhahn is next on the list to make it big. Papke said he is his next hopeful.

McPhie, Wilson lock up Olympic berths
Getting to know: Bryon Wilson
Bockhahn is training hard. He spends much of his time in the gym, and after school, he is usually on the hills of Bridger Bowl.

“I’m one of the best out here at Bridger,” Bockhahn said.

Bockhahn is hoping his hard work and confidence will turn into realizing his dream in 2014. He wants to be part of the Olympic Mogul Team himself.

“It’s definitely been a lifelong dream,” he said.

The success of skiers like McPhie and Wilson have shown that the small Montana program isn’t something to take lightly. It’s a place where Olympians are made. And Papke and his team are hoping they can keep them coming.

And it is all about working harder than the next person, and reaching for the gold.

“Most of the coaches have been through the sport,” Papke said. “That’s why our passion is still with mogul skiing.”

BSF Freestyle Alum Mcphie and Wilson earn spots in Olympics!

PARK CITY, Utah — Bozeman’s Heather McPhie and Butte’s Bryon Wilson wrapped up their first trips to the Winter Olympics on Saturday night with strong World Cup moguls finishes.
“It’s been such a whirlwind,” McPhie told the Chronicle on Monday. “Everything just seems to keep on building, the things I’ve been working on, so it’s really exciting to see all my hard work continue to pay off and then keep getting one more piece of the puzzle put in place.”

McPhie finished behind reigning Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Heil of Canada, who earned her third straight win at Deer Valley and fourth straight World Cup triumph, two days after tying the Canadian skier for the top spot.

France's Guilbaut Colas won the men's event for the third time in his last four tries.

In the thick of internal team competition, U.S. women were second through fifth, stacking the podium until they were upended by Heil in the night's final run.

"Our team is unbelievable right now," McPhie said. "Every single day is more pressure if you let it get to you coming up to February, and we're all answering, harder than we've ever answered. It gives me goosebumps to talk about my team. It kills me that we can't all go."

Wilson was 14th on the Champion course but earned his trip to Vancouver when none of his U.S. teammates could earn the victory — the only selection criteria that would override Wilson's two podium finishes this year.

"I'm psyched to go to the Olympics," said Wilson, who scored his two top-3 finishes after an injury opened a start for him in Finland in December. "It's been a dream for so long. I wish I could've skied better tonight, but I'm going to the Olympics."

Australian overall leader Dale Begg-Smith took second after winning Friday, while Canada's Alexandre Bilodeau finished third.

Michelle Roark, who qualified for the Olympics in 2006 with a win in Deer Valley, was third and put herself in strong position to lock up a spot in the final pre-Olympics event Thursday in Lake Placid, N.Y. The team will be officially nominated Jan. 26 in Park City.

"The podium is definitely something I needed," Roark said. "I needed it really bad."

With a spot already in the bag thanks to a win at the Olympic Trials, Hannah Kearney breezed to a fourth-place finish Saturday.

"I was very devastated to miss the podium, but I'm moving in the right direction," she said.

Nobody could match Heil, who stuck a perfect run with a floating helicopter at the top and a huge backflip at the bottoom.

"I'm having so much fun," Heil said. "I feel like I won the lottery to compete in my own country in the Olympics, so I'm just doing my best to get ready for that."

Patrick Deneen was ninth after taking one of the four men's Olympic spots with a trials win in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
